SUMMER REVIEW:

We are working through environmental review for more trail projects from the Sherwins Area Recreation Plan (SHARP), conceived by members of the Sherwins Working Group in 2009 and documented in the SHARP, and we are excited to share information about our 2019 season of work throughout the Mammoth Lakes Trail System. THIS WINTER:

Winter is here and we are grooming the Winter Multi-Use Trails at Shady Rest. Three miles of groomed trails begin at the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center. Main access to the trail network is just across from the Welcome Center entrance, marked by a sign and a map for orientation. The trails will be groomed for Nordic skiing/skating, walking, fat biking and snowshoeing. The rolling terrain is easily accessible from Town and perfect for most ability levels. This facility is maintained by the Mammoth Lakes Trail System through a Challenge Cost Share Agreement between the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Inyo National Forest with funding from Measure R's annual allocation to the Mammoth Lakes Trail System.

There are three large signs at the Sherwins Trailhead (Borrow Pit/Propane Tanks), the Mill City Trailhead, and at the junction of the public access corridor and the Sherwins boot pack in the Lakes Basin. The signs provide winter recreation enthusiasts with general topographic, backcountry etiquette and emergency information including avalanche beacon checkers, provided by the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center (ESAC), so that backcountry travelers can test their equipment before venturing out. Measure U is also playing a supporting role by allowing the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center (ESAC) to provide up to date avalanche advisories in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. The reports will be integrated into the Mammoth Lakes Trail System web site at mammothtrails.org.
